How do I apply for a job and where do I go?
The University of Michigan and UMHS both have an easy-to-use, automated application process.
There is a job search module on nearly every page of this site that allows you to quickly search for jobs within the Health System, by keyword, area of specialty or other criteria.
For Nursing jobs we recommend you visit www.UMnursing.org. Allied Health jobs we recommend you visit www.UMHScareers.org. For jobs at the University of Michigan, outside of the health system, we recommend you visit www.umjobs.org for complete details.
Those seeking temporary UMHS positions can search online at www.UMHScareers.org. For Nurses seeking temporary nursing positions, please visit www.UMnursing.org.
Does the University require pre-employment testing? What is the process?
Pre-employment Assessment Process
Our pre-employment screening is an on-line comprehensive assessment for certain entry-level positions at UMHS. This assessment takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and screens for 9 core competencies which are found to be highly desirable in the healthcare field. The assessment is scored based on five different job families: Nursing, Patient Care, Administrative/Clerical, Technical/Professional, and Entry-Level Service. Within a week of applying, all applicants will receive an email from
HR-Recruitment@med.umich.edu with a link to take the assessment.
Assessments will be required of all of the job classifications that were previously screened by PEP (Pre-employment Program), including:
- Administrative Support
- Entry Level Allied Health
- Office/Clerical
- Service Maintenance
Where do you currently have openings? How often should I check for newly posted positions?
Our careers web site provides a comprehensive list of all jobs currently available with UMHS. New positions become available frequently, and our database is updated regularly.
We recommend you bookmark our site, and check back often for newly posted positions, specifically on Tuesdays for GN, RN and LPN positions. Also, by subscribing to our RSS Feeds, you can have the latest opportunities sent directly to you via the Web.
NURSING positions are typically posted by 12 Noon on Mondays and are posted for a five day minimum, typically coming off the job boards at midnight on Friday. Checking the job boards each week is highly recommended.
Is it possible to have an employment application faxed to me?
No, we no longer have a paper application. Please visit www.umjobs.org, www.UMnursing.org or www.UMHScareers.org to search and apply for open positions with us.
I applied for a position, but I am not sure that my application was accepted. What happens next?
If you successfully applied for a position, you will receive a notification immediately from the system that we have received your application materials. You will also receive notification when a job has been filled, so be sure to watch your e-mail for important updates regarding all of the jobs you have applied for at UMHS.
I applied for a position a while ago and have not heard anything. What should I do?
The University of Michigan Health System has seen a big increase in applicant volume recently. This, in turn, does create some delays in the review process for our open positions. It may take several weeks for a manager to review your resume and information and to begin contact with qualified candidates. However, rest assured that if the hiring manager identifies you as a qualified for the position, you will be contacted.
Do I need to provide a cover letter with my application/resume?
If the job requires a cover letter, it should be included in your application materials. You can only attach one document for each job, so be sure that your cover letter and resume are combined into one document.
